November 2007 - Newsletter & President's Corner

Progress, Proficiency and Prognostication

What an exciting meeting we had with District Governor Frank Wedig on October 23! We were also pleased to welcome Vice District Governor Joan Sleesman and Zone Chairman and fellow Chambersburg Lion John Massa. District Governor Wedig challenged us with stories of his travels abroad and work with Lions International. He recounted illustrations of the many ways that we as Lions have influenced and continue to have the opportunity to influence lives far beyond our local area. With this broader vision it is imperative that we continue to think outside of ourselves and truly own the Lions motto "We Serve".

We were also pleased to welcome three (3) new members into our organization. Please join me in congratulating Lions Norma Bigham, Steve Hawbaker and Dave Mummert as they sponsored new Lions Laura Miller, Ken Brookens and Neil Rotz. We were introduced to Laura when she shared information about her work with Lutheran Home Care several months ago. Ken is a Commercial Lender Assistant Vice President with F&M Trust and Neil is an Audit staff associate with Smith, Elliott, Kearns with his most impressive biographical info being ‘the firstborn son' of our own Lion Dave Rotz. We also (just today) received and approved an application for membership from James Kuchta - sponsored by Lion Bobbi Washabaugh.

A special thank you to members who have invited guests to our meetings - 12 of you have done so in the last two months. It is a pleasure for us to meet new faces and with pride to introduce them to the greatest service organization in the world. The outcome of this can be nothing but positive.

On a sad note - we mourn the loss of Lion Ken Gabler on October 24. Having served with our club for over 60 years, Ken was a lifetime Lions member and Melvin Jones recipient. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gabler family. The Chambersburg Noontime Lions have set aside a memorial contribution to the Park Avenue United Methodist Church. It is an honor to have a man who had such a positive impact on our community be part of our Noontime Lions club.

Finally, instead of finding something to criticize - find one or two areas in your life for which to be thankful. We are indeed blessed beyond what we readily recognize. As we enter the season of Thanksgiving may we be mindful of and share with those less fortunate.

Yours in Service,
Lion Dean Martin, President
